Reflections on Earth’s Mirror

Reflections on Earth’s Mirror

A workshop-seminar about imaging, planet Earth and future-based scenarios, with Luiza Crosman - March 19, 2022

Led by artist and researcher Luiza Crosman, Reflections On Earth’s Mirror is a one-day workshop about the imaging apparatus that represent and produce different versions of the same planet, and its consequences on both our present and our future.

The once synonymous words globe, world and planet are not interchangeable anymore. While planet relates to the astrophysical object, globe and world relate to our human experience. The chasm that separates them are exemplified in the current multi-crisis we have been experiencing in politics, climate, economy and in our epistemological frameworks.

During the workshop Crosman will share insights on her research and offer the participants a set of image records that are used to understand the Earth, such as the famous “Blue Marble” photograph, the Westphalian geopolitical map or climate prevision graphs.

The participants will be asked to choose one (or bring their own) and unpack the visions and scenarios that are subtly tied to it, brainstorm, and finally develop a short, visual presentation of a speculative future-based scenario departing from the chosen image record. Which planet have those images records built? What kind of infrastructure does this scenario require? What are its governance models? Crosman will guide the participants through a better understanding of different, material world-views, link them to geological aspects of the Earth, and suggest possible frameworks for future action.

Profile of participants

The workshop is open to students, teachers, mixed teams of students and teachers, emerging artists, art collectives and other groups of people who join for the occasion. No specific skills are required, but some familiarity with image creation (such as image manipulation or composition, or video editing) will be useful.
